My understanding is that the statue itself holds no symbolic value, at least to the Vanderbilt family. It seems their eldest son, being a bit of kleptomaniac as well as a bored wealthy teen, enjoyed relieving famous museums of their works of art. This one “showed up” after a family visit to the Lourve. Thankfully, the family was kind enough to return it to the museum, but only after museum officials put in the winning bid at the silent auction.
